Wait—Do Arkansas Students Really Need 75 Volunteer Hours to Graduate?

Beginning with Arkansas's 2026–2027 graduating class, public high school students are expected to complete at least 75 clock hours of documented community service during grades 9 through 12. That works out to roughly 19 hours per school year, although students do not necessarily have to divide the hours evenly.

The important words are documented and approved. Helping a neighbor, participating in a fundraiser, serving through a church, or completing a virtual project may be meaningful, but a school can still decide that the activity does not meet its rules. Ask your counselor or designated school contact before depending on any project for graduation credit.

Arkansas guidance encourages school districts to establish approved sites and local partnerships. Common possibilities include food banks, libraries, parks, animal-welfare organizations, youth programs, community events, and other nonprofit or public-service work. Your district may publish its own list, form, approval process, or limits on certain activities.

Do not assume that travel time, paid work, court-related service, family chores, political activity, unsupervised projects, or donations automatically count. Rules can also differ for virtual service, faith-based service, fundraising, and work performed for relatives. When in doubt, describe the organization, task, supervisor, and dates to your school and get a written answer first.

Seventy-five hours sounds much less intimidating when it is spread across four years. A two-hour shift once a month during the school year can cover most of the requirement without a last-minute scramble. Students with sports, jobs, caregiving responsibilities, transportation limits, or disabilities should talk with their school early about workable placements and any applicable alternatives.

Choose a mix that fits your schedule. One-time cleanups and events can add several hours, while a recurring library, food bank, tutoring, or community role makes progress predictable. A steady role also gives a supervisor enough time to know your work and verify it confidently.

Use the exact record your school requests. At minimum, keep the date, start and end time, total hours, organization, task, supervisor's name, and supervisor's contact information. Ask for a signature or digital confirmation after each shift instead of trying to reconstruct a year of service later.
